And he’s not wrong. Having been a personal fan of Korean cinema for some time, Les’s suggestion was music to my ears. However, as always, we’re not going to put you in a corner and force you to watch a subtitled film if it’s not your cup of soju. So what are your options this week? A Korean Movie The heart of this week’s challenge. Exactly what it says: watch a movie made or produced in Korea. There’s an absolute abundance of excellent cinema from the Republic of Korea, many of which are in the suggestions list below. Starring/Written/Directed by someone of Korean heritage There are many English-language films which feature the talents of either a Korean director (like Bong Joon-ho, director of Snowpiercer and Mickey 17) or actors like Steven Yeun, Ken Jeong, Greta Lee, Daniel Dae Kim, Randall Park, Awkwafina, and Sandra Oh, to name just a few recognisable names. Filmed or set in Korea Next up, movies filmed or set in Korea - preferably more than a fleeting scene. These would mostly likely take place in Seoul or Busan, films centred around the Korean War, or even international productions that use Korea for certain scenes e.g. MAS*H (1970), The Interview (2014), or Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), which features a major sequence set in Seoul. Remakes/Originals Again, preferably a Korean remake or the original version of another movie. For example, The Lake House, starring Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves, was a remake of the Korean film Il Mare (2000). But there’s nothing stopping you from watching the US remake of Oldboy (2013), directed by Spike Lee (although we’d urge you to skip it in favour of the original).
