This week Cinechums, we're diving into a theme that, makes the world go round: money. Thanks to a fantastic suggestion from Sammie B, our movie challenge this week is to watch a movie that features money, the concept of value or currency in the title, or as a pivotal part of the plot.
Starting with movies that have money, or a concept of money in the title, Kicking off our magnificent list money movies is Charlie Chaplin's "The Gold Rush" (1925), in which the infamous tramp chases fortune in the Klondike. Sergio Leone’s "A Fistful of Dollars" (1964), introduces Clint Eastwood in the first of the man with no name trilogy. Marilyn Monroe shines in "How to Marry a Millionaire" (1953), a comedy about 3 woman trying to find a rich husband in New York. Martin Scorsese’s "The Color of Money" (1986), has Paul Newman and Tom Cruise in a gripping pool hall drama about hustlers. John Woo’s "Paycheck" (2003), is a sci-fi thriller in which Ben Affleck uncovers a corporate conspiracy. Clint Eastwood's "Million Dollar Baby" (2004) packs a punch with Hilary Swank in an emotional tale of a determined boxer and "Moneyball" (2011) brings Brad Pitt into the analytical world of baseball, changing the game forever when he’s forced to put together a winning team on a budget.
Now looking at movies with a money-centric plot: starting with the timeless "It's a Wonderful Life" from 1946, featuring James Stewart in a heartwarming tale by Frank Capra. Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway star in Arthur Penn's "Bonnie and Clyde" (1967), bringing the infamous outlaws to life. Can't forget the riotous "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World" (1963) by Stanley Kramer, a comedy treasure hunt with an all-star cast. Begger Eddie Murphy and Stock Broker Dan Aykroyd switch lives in John Landis's hilarious "Trading Places" (1983). There’s Oliver Stone's "Wall Street" (1987), where Michael Douglas famously declares, "Greed is good." Scorsese's "Casino" (1995), sees Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci mastering the Vegas underworld. The Coen Brother’s "Fargo" (1996) is an outstanding dark comedy crime tale about a desperate man and his debt. "Boiler Room" (2000), which is loosely based on Jordan Belfort of The Wolf of Wall St Fame delves into high stakes of investment fraud with Giovanni Ribisi. Spielberg's "Catch Me If You Can" (2002) has DiCaprio as a charming con artist earning millions before he even turned 19, and finally, DiCaprio returns in Scorsese's "The Wolf of Wall Street" (2013), a crazy ride through stock market excess.
