Hello my CineChums! This week’s challenge comes courtesy of a suggestion by PirateDJ. What we love about it is it’s simplicity. This week, we’re talking - shapes! That’s right, watch a movie that's either got a shape right there in the title or features a particular shape that plays a pivotal role in the plot.
Let's kick things off with some suggestions for the obvious shapes, triangle and circle.
First up, there’s “Triangle” (2009), an psychological thriller, that follows the story of a group of friends whose yacht trip turns deadly when they come across an abandoned ship. “Circle of Friends” (1995) is romantic drama set in 1950s Ireland, focusing on the dynamics of a group of friends as they navigate relationships and societal expectations. Finally in “The Square” (2017) A prestigious Stockholm museum's art curator finds himself in a professional and personal crisis as he attempts to set up a controversial new exhibit
Shapes aren’t just flat, giving them volume makes them 3D. “Cube” (1997), a sci-fi thriller where the characters navigate a maze of cube-shaped rooms, each with its own deadly traps. “Sphere” (1998) features the discovery of a perfect sphere in the ocean depths, that leads to a harrowing and mind-bending adventure. The early nineties comedy “Coneheads” (1993), about Aliens with cone shaped heads crash landing on Earth.
Looking at movies in which a shape plays an integral plot point, the obvious suggestion here is the Coen Brothers comedy, “The Hudsucker Proxy” (1994) about a young business graduate promoted to president of a manufacturing company as part of a stock scam. In the unlikely event you’ve not seen “Inception” (2010), there’s an argument that would count thanks to each character having a totem that grounds them, each one having a distinct shape, weight and feel. Darren Aronofsky’s directorial debut, “Pi” (1999) is about a man obsessed with finding patterns in the stock market and in nature, focusing on the mathematical constant π (pi), which is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter.
Thinking outside the box (pun intended) you could watch a movie about a love TRIANGLE like “Bridget Jones’s Diary” (2001). The phrase “CIRCLING the Wagons” means a group getting together, and digging in tightly to defend themselves. Something seen in John Carpenters excellent “Assault on Precinct 13” (1978). Then there’s “Warrior” (2011) in which 2 estranged brothers end up on a collision course to fight each other in the UFC OCTAGON.
So, CineChums, share what you’ve watched, your shortlist to watch, or any recomendations in the comments and let’s shape up for another great week!
These movies are mentioned in the video as potential suggestions for the challenge.
